Metric profile for OCI monitoring

Site24x7 offers Metric Profiles for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) monitoring, allowing you to selectively monitor specific performance metrics. This feature helps optimize API usage, minimizing the number of API calls to Oracle Cloud's monitoring services and reducing costs.

Use case

Let's say you're monitoring an OCI Object Storage bucket with Site24x7. If you choose not to monitor metrics like Bytes In and Bytes Out, Site24x7 will not calculate the derived metrics related to data transfer, potentially limiting the insights available for that resource. By tailoring the metrics you monitor, you can optimize your OCI monitoring, focusing on the most critical performance indicators while minimizing unnecessary API consumption.

Things to note

Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:

  • Only OCI metrics can be selected within a Metric Profile. This gives you control over what performance data is retrieved and monitored.
  • If a specific metric for a resource is deselected in the Metric Profile and the monitor is in a Trouble state, the monitor's status will change to Up during the next poll.
  • When no metrics are selected for monitoring, only the availability status of the resource will be displayed by default.
  • If base metrics aren't selected, then Site24x7 does not generate data for derived metrics. For instance, in the case of monitoring an OCI Compute Instance, if you don’t select core metrics like CPU Utilization or Memory Usage, any derived metrics dependent on these values will not be calculated.

Configuring a Metric Profile for OCI monitoring

A Metric Profile can be configured in three ways:

Configuration Profiles

Configuration Profiles let you customize monitoring settings such as notifications, thresholds, credentials, and alerts based on your specific requirements. From the Configuration Profiles section, you can create, modify, or remove profiles as needed.

To configure the Metric Profile:

  1. Navigate to Admin > Configuration Profiles > Metric Profile.
  2. On the Metric Profile page, you can view all the profiles that have been configured previously.
  3. To add a new profile, click the Add Metric Profile button in the top-right corner of the page.
  4. Choose Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as the Profile Type.
  5. Enter a Display Name.
  6. Select the desired metrics for the respective monitor type and click Save.

Once the profiles are created, select the hamburger icon to the right of the profile name to edit or delete the profiles created.

OCI integration

In the Add OCI Monitor > Discovery Options section, you can view the Metric Profile field. The Metric Profile drop-down displays existing profiles; you can create a new one by clicking the + icon and providing a Display Name. Once a profile is created, you can modify or associate it with a monitor. The Add OCI Monitor page allows you to manage, edit, and link profiles to monitors.

Defining an action as a configuration rule

While adding a configuration rule, in the Define Actions section, select Metric Profile to view the profiles configured previously. You can associate the profiles created with a monitor from this section.
